Johnny Pusong has its origin as a folklore hero in Waray-waray literature. In which, pusong (posong) is a form of Waray narrative in the ancient times which connotes a joke; hence, it is where Johnny Pusong got his surname.
In the 1960s through a popular radio station, Johnny Pusong was then known as Juan Posong. Later, in the 1970s, Juan Posong became Johnny Pusong and was made popular by the late radio announcer Rene Pilande in the Waray region, and by late Art Maloy in the Cebu region.
In other communities, Pusong is also known as Osong, Puson or Tamad. In other tales he is known as Pilandok, Padol, Masoy and Andres. Among the written accounts of Johnny Pusong in English was written by Dean S. Fansler during the years 1908-1914 in which Pusong is depicted as “Juan the Fool.” In another tale, Fransler refers him as Juan Loco.
Other records denote him as Juan Puson which translates as “Jack Paunch,” meanwhile for the Tagalogs, he is popular as Juan Tamad or simply Juan.
